Detailed Plot Summary[]

Eleven year old Jon Whitcroft is sent to Salisbury Cathedral School, the boarding school his late father used to attend, on account of all the pranks he plays on Matthew Littlejohn, his mother's boyfriend. He is put in a room with two other boarders, Angus Mulroney and Stuart Crenshaw.

After two meetings with a pack of vengeful ghosts who intend to murder him, Jon attracts the attentions of Ella Littlejohn, whose grandmother, Zelda Littlejohn, does ghost tours for tourists. When Jon visits Zelda's house in hopes that she will be able to help him get rid of the ghosts. They find out that the ghosts want to kill him due to their leader, Charles Stourton, being hanged along with four servants for murdering William Hartgill and his son John, thus now Stourton is intent on murdering all their descendants, particularly males.

Ella, hearing this from Zelda, suggests they try calling on the ghost of the deceased William Longspee, who was said to still be trying to fulfill an oath he made a short while before dying to protect those in need. Longspee appears to Jon's summons and Ella manages to persuade him to help Jon. Longspee brands Jon with a mark of a lion, stating that if he closed his hand over the crest, Longspee will be there to help.
